I thoroughly enjoyed taking an excursion ride on the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad through the mountains of northern New Mexico. Trip photos assisted with this painting which was done for my grandson who is a big fan of trains. Experiencing a ride on the rails pulled by a steam locomotive is a trip back in time to another era when train travel was the method of transportation for America and the world.

Print Size - 12" x 11 ¾ "

This painting is titled, "The Healer." The painting is modeled on Nicholas "Black Elk" a member of the Oglala Lakota. Heȟáka Sápa (Black Elk) was born in 1863 and died in 1950 is believed to have been a wičháša wakȟáŋ (“holy man") of the Oglala Lakota people. He was a second cousin of the war leader Crazy Horse.

Black Elk is perhaps most well known for the books written about him by amateur ethnologist, John Neihardt, whom he met near the end of his life. Neihardt wrote about Black Elk's religious views, visions, and events from his life. Neihardt published his book "Black Elk Speaks" in 1932. There has been great interest in Black Elk’s work by those who have wanted to learn more about Native American religions. Black Elk was also interviewed and recorded by Joseph Epes Brown and his book “The Sacred Pipe” is an intriguing read on Sioux rituals and spirituality. Both books provide intriguing insight into the life and beliefs of the Lakota people as provided by Heȟáka Sápa.

As a long-time horse owner I wanted to paint this subject matter to highlight the moral support, bonding, protection and education provided by a group of mares to a filly. I have always enjoyed learning from watching the interaction of animal groups in such settings. The background used in the painting came from the central New Mexico near the small community of Golden.

This painting is another on my path to painting detailed figures into my works of art. I have found the challenge interesting and enjoyable. I am planning on taking my camera to outdoor festivals, rodeos and other gatherings to capture those interesting faces, figures and outfits and paint them in watercolor. Enjoy.

The Village of Rocheport, Missouri has an intriguing history that includes Native-Americans, explorers Lewis and Clark, Confederate soldiers seizing the town, New Madrid earthquakes survivors and village founders, Daniel Boone, Louisiana Purchase, and the Missouri River. Founded in 1825 along the Missouri River, Rocheport became a river port trading with locals, pioneers and explorers heading west.
Dr. George Wilcox built the brick home in this painting in 1837. Dr. Wilcox commissioned stonemason Reuben Elliot to build the home, which was one of the first brick homes in Rocheport. This historic and beautiful home is known for it’s colorful gardens including the flower cart.

I have run across these sheep while fishing in the mountains and along the Rio Grande Gorge in New Mexico. It was interesting to watch the sheep come down the hillsides to drink and then later gather with others to feed. It is always a thrill to encounter wildlife when on outings into the back country.

I have been painting more figures of western men for the challenge and to sharpen my skills. This painting was such an endeavor but I have recently been asked why I do not paint western women? My response then and now “I will give it a try.” I do not want to insult any of the ladies.

I have also loved antique cars, trucks and airplanes as they really fascinate me. Just looking at them pushes me back in time to when they were built and used by an earlier generation. For me they will always been interesting subject matter for paintings and day dreaming of earlier times.

I have done several fly fishing related paintings and because I love this sport there will likely be more in the future. The thrill of catching a fish on a fly rod is the same for me today as when I got my first rod from my Dad as a teenager. Painting this image reminds of my Dad and the fishing outings with him.

I have wanted to do a painting of a wolf (Spanish Lobo) having admiration for them and several chance encounters with wolves while a Conservation Officer in Alaska. They are a magnificent animal and effective hunters of the largest game. It was always a thrill to hear wolves in the wild and get an occasional glimpse of them on a frozen river in the deep of winter in the Interior of Alaska. It is one of many fond memories I have of living and experiencing such wonderful creatures in their environment 4,000 miles north of New Mexico.

I have often shared that I love history especially the early history of the southwest. Part of that history is still visually present throughout New Mexico’s landscape in the remains of old buildings that served settlers as homes, ranch buildings and at times for entertainment. I found the remains of one such building on the east slope of the Sandia Mountains. I soon learned that in it’s glory it was a community dance hall. What stories it could tell of festivals, celebrations of weddings and births so long ago. Little remains but these old adobe walls. Looking into the windows and doors that hold onto life in this old building I can imagine the life of this community as it once was so long ago... full of dreams and hope for a better future.

During the September-October mating season, bull elk stage a spectacular play. The characteristic rutting call of bulls can be heard from just before dusk to dawn. The typical bugle of the bull elk is a surprising, distinctive sound that begins deep and resonant, and becomes a high pitched squeal before ending in a succession of grunts. The sounds of elks bugling overlap and reverberate against the rock outcroppings and hills. Their bugling call echoes across meadows – it’s a haunting and primeval sound. The experience will astound you. You will be reminded that you are standing on sacred ground — where the first peoples of America stood and the same echoes of nature filled the autumn, night air.
